Our story
Chapter 01 · Colima
Colima is one of Mexico’s smallest states, far from the usual tech hubs. MagmaLabs began there with two goals that still run the company: build products our clients are proud to put in front of their users, and give local talent access to real, international work without having to leave home.
Chapter 02 · Bright Coders
Hiring senior people in a small city meant training them first. Bright Coders, a Colima academy for Rails and React Native developers, opened in 2014. Its graduates now write code, mentor and lead on MagmaLabs client teams.
Chapter 03 · Kickass Partners
In January 2020 MagmaLabs merged with Kickass Partners, the CTO-for-hire consultancy founded by Obie Fernandez, author of The Rails Way. The company kept the MagmaLabs name. Obie became Partner and Chief Consultant, and his team moved to our Colima headquarters.

Chapter 04 · MagmaChat
We open-sourced MagmaChat, a platform for building, hosting and scaling agents on large language models. Working with AI every day taught us where it speeds a team up, and exactly where AI-written code breaks once real users arrive.
Chapter 05 · 2026
Most of our clients hire senior engineers who join their squad and stay for years. More and more also bring us software they built fast, with or without AI, and ask whether it will hold. We answer with a fixed-price audit, then fix what matters and stay to scale it.
How we work

Engineers stay on an account end to end, working your hours. Nobody re-learns your codebase every quarter. Our longest engagement is past eight years.

Our leads review, mentor and pair. It is how juniors from Colima become the engineers US teams ask for by name.

We contribute to the open-source tools we depend on and publish what we learn on Today I Learned, the blog and our podcast.

We publish our prices, date our stats and tell you what a fix costs before we start. You should be able to take our number to your board.
